SENTENCE STRUCTURES





Simple Sentences
1.      1 subject + 1 verb
For example : Ali is eating.
Ali is the subject and eating is the verb.

2.      Compound subject + 1 verb
For example : Ali and Abu are eating.
Ali and Abu is the compound (combined) and eating is verb.

3.      1 subject + compound verb
For example : Ali is eating and watching TV.
Ali is the subject, eating and watching TV is the compound (combined) verb.

4.      Compound subject + compound verb.
For example : Ali and Abu are eating and watching TV.
Ali and Abu is the compound subject, eating and watching is the compound verb.


Compound Sentence

            *Two independent clauses joined together using coordinating conjunctions.
               FANBOYS
1.      For
2.      And
3.      Nor
4.      But
5.      Or
6.      Yet
7.      So
For example :
1.      Ali is playing for his school team.
2.      Ali or Abu is hungry right now?
**
It MUST be in a form of 1 independent clause + 1 independent clause.
  
  
Complex Sentence

1 independent clause + 1 or more dependent clauses by using subordinating or coordinating conjunctions.
For example :
1.      She returned to the computer after she noticed it was damaged
2.      Wherever you go, you can always find beauty.

Compound – Complex Sentence

2 independent clause + 1 or more dependent clauses by using subordinating or coordinating conjunctions.
          For example :

Ali is eating and Abu is watching TV but both are bored.
